Class 5 have made a great start back at school. They have gelled well and are a very hard working class so we are looking forward to the year ahead.
The children have got stuck into the History topic World War 2 and have already started bringing in things from home. The children have already written some great newspaper articles about the battle at Dunkirk as well as writing letter to back home in character. The worked very hard and produced some excellent piece of work which are on display for you to see!
The children have started doing a PowerPoint on the Blitz and will be doing some film making later on in the half term.
BUDDIES
The Year 6 children have been given their ‘Buddies’ this week. They are very excited about taking care of them in their first few days at Primary School and are looking forward to some activities later on in the year.
Their first assignment was helping their buddies make houses. They had such fun painting, gluing and designing houses with them.
MACMILLAN
The MacMillan morning was a great success so thanks to everyone who visited St Anthony’s. I would like to take this opportunity to say a big thanks to my year 6’s for showing parent and members of the community around the school. You did a great job and visitors were impressed with your confidence and assistance.
FILM MAKING
We have been working hard on our ICT this week thanks to ‘Rad’. After weeks of planning our WW2 stories, Class 5 had the opportunity to do some filming. They brought costumes from home and we made props in school. We made an old fashioned radio, a typically WW2 evacuee suitcase, with tag and we made our very own steam train. The children put all their efforts into the project and were so excited to get acting.
Once they had the footage it was time to edit and produce the films. They didn’t have long and it was the first time they had used new software such as Movie Maker however the outcomes were great and we had our very our red carpet moment!
SHELTERS - DESIGN TECHNOLOGY
Whilst studying WW2 we decided shelter making was the perfect DT project for us! After researching the purpose and analysing the appropriate materials the children designed a ‘Morrison Shelter’ used in WW2 to protect them from Blitz attacks. The children learnt a lot about the reality of being in WW2 as well as a range of skills: sawing safely; measuring accurately; using a hot glue gun; hammering nails in for extra strength and evaluated their finished design effectively.
Take at look at Class 5 in action!
PERSUASION - LITERACY
In the literacy unit we have been creating some super sentences to encourage you to buy specific products. Using alliteration, rhyme, onomatopoeia, rhetorical questions, conditional sentences, repetition and play on words they create a poster, a description and advert to use their persuasive powers!!!
I scream, You Scream, We all scream for Ice- cream! Yum Yum ice-cream in my tum tum.
· Funky fresh flavours
· Tempting toppings
· Scrumptious sauces
· Irresistible ice-scream

ZOO LAB
Louise came in to show us a range of her very own unusual animals that she keeps at home. She was full of interesting facts about the nocturnal animals and all the children were brave enough to hold them!!!
CIRCUITS - SCIENCE
This half term we are studying changing circuits. After recapping conductors and symbols for the components in a circuit we investigated:
· how to make bulbs brighter and dimmer
· how to slow down and speed up a motor
· how to increase and decrease the sound of buzzer
by making different changes to the circuit.
They used different wire, added batteries and removed and added extra components.
ALADDIN
After watching the superb pantomime ‘Aladdin’ at the Alhambra this week, the children were super stimulated to do some writing based on the storyline. Class 3 did some crazy character descriptions; Class 4 did some powerful play scripts and raving reviews of the show whilst Class 5 did some remarkable recounts.
The work from all 3 classes was superb therefore had to be proudly displayed in the Hall.
Well done St Anthony’s!
Junior readers
Mrs Hinchcliff has been running a Junior reading club at lunchtime.
It is lovely to see the oldest children in the school helping the younger ones on their reading journey.
As you can see they put those bean bags to good use!
IMPS TRIP
The children were superb representatives for the school this week when we made a trip to Bradford Royal Infirmary. We spent part of the day looking at the accident and emergency area and what to expect if you were to cut, burn or injure yourself. We then spent the other part of the day looking at CPR and recovery position. The children are now familiar with the phrasen DRSABC:
Danger?
Response?
Shout – dial 999
Airways
Breathing
CPR
We practiced on some very hi-tech dummies we named ‘Auntie Joan’ and the children did very well at identifying issues that can occur, that would prevent you from completing the full sequence DRSABC such as dangers and strangers.
With regards the recovery position the children are very well practiced so much so they are dying to demonstrate in assembly so please do come along.
World Book Day
To celebrate the annual world book day each class has chosen a theme for dressing up.
Class 1 and 2 - Fairy Tales
Class 3 - Robin Hood
Class 4 - Myths and Legends
Class 5 - Happy Families' collection.
Happy Families' by Allan Ahlberg was very popular when I was a girl and gave the children plenty of variety and good ideas.
Conjurers', vets, dustbin daughters, jockeys, boxers, cops and robbers and builders. They looked fantastic.
I am very pleased to say the Megan was the whole school winner for the best outfit (homemade as well!) Well done Megan.
Myths and Legends
After all their hard work everyone in class 5 has written a superb myth with a mythical monster, super brave hero, long journey and grueling battle.
They are displayed with pride on Class 5 working wall and I have put a few below for you to read.
Disability awareness week
As part of disability awareness week we kick started by meeting the Paralympics champion Jossi. Her story was so inspiring and the children really enjoyed asking her questions about her life and getting an autograph!!!
We also got a chance to have a go at wheelchair rugby. They worked on the skills of turning, stopping and passing. As you can see the children loved it! Look out for our picture in the paper :)
Mad hair day!
Today we have been collecting money for Alms and donating to Catholic care.
The children were invited to come to school with mad hair in exchange for £1. From pigtails to afros, to LOADS of gel and hairspray – the crazier the better!
I am also running a ‘Guess Jessie J’s hairstyle’ competition. Winners will be announced in celebration assembly.
Falconry
The children had an excellent day when they were visited by some superb bird of prey.
Caudia – European Eagle Owl
Shadow - Barn Owl
Pippin - Kestrel
Toby – Harris Hawk
Julian - African Vulture – (only 40 days old)
The children were so in awe and had excellent questions all day. They watched them fly, got to hold them and found out so much information.
DT – Sock Monkeys
With SAT’s now complete we can relax (just a little bit) and the children have been getting stuck into a sowing DT topic-Sock Monkeys!!
Yes, we make a monkey out of a single pair of socks.
They followed the instructions brilliantly and learnt to use back stitch and over stitch.
Speed Mark
This week the children have been getting sponsors from friends and family to support the school. The children got three penalty kicks and the speed of their shot was recorded.
The children were amazing, very powerful kicks and raising loads of money. Well done class 5!
Girls winners – Xenia Parrinello and Chloe Wilkinson.
Boys winner – Louis Fialdini
