VISIT TO HEADINGLEY AND ESHOLT WATER TREATMENT WORKS

As part of our Geography topic on Water, Class 4 visited the Water Treatment Works at Headingley and Esholt. We had tours around both sites and did lots of fun activities. We learnt a lot about how river water is cleaned for us to drink and also how sewage water is cleaned and recycled back in to the river. Amazingly within 24 hours of flushing the toilet the waste water is cleaned and back in to the river!!

WORLD BOOK DAY

Class 4 Visit to Osbaldeston Farm

Class 4 travelled to Clitheroe to visit Osbaldeston Farm which is a fully automated dairy farm. We were able to interact with the calves, see a cow being milked by hand and then watch a cow being milked by a 'robot' machine. It was absolutely fascinating to watch lasers locate the teats in the udder and attach themselves in order to extract the milk. The cows decide when they want to be milked and everything is recorded so the farmers know how often the cows have been milked.

Many thanks to Lee and Mark from the Countryside Trust who organised the visit and drove the minibuses.

In Literacy we have been looking at the use of imagery to help us improve our writing. In particular we have looked at the use of Visual, Auditory, Tactile and Olfactory imagery through the use of powerful adjectives.

Here are some of the superb sentences we wrote.

The sea was as gigantic as a mammoth crashing down like a thunderbolt.

A chilly wind made the sea colder than an ice cube.    Gabriel, Conner  and Julia

The dark, dynamic ocean  was twisting and rolling like a roller coaster.

The mighty waves thundered forcefully against the jagged rocks.   Ryan Parker, Lewis L and Ethan

The deadly, powerful and colossal waves were as big as Big Ben. They crashed, bashed and collided against the tiny boat, throwing it around like bouncy ball.  Lewis Ream, Shelby and Timmy

The monstrous, mean sea crashed against the rocks.

The waves splashed and bashed with a thunderous boom.   Max and Ralph

The stormy sea surged towards the rocking boat ,tossing it left and right, violently pushing it under the water.

Crashing and bashing against the rocks, colliding with other mighty and powerful waves, like a vicious beast hunting for prey.

Lucy and Faith

The stormy sea crashed and splashed on to the rocky beach like a rumbling rock, rolling and rolling down a steep hill.

Joe, Lewis W and Oliver

The arctic, cold sea boomed and crashed against the rocks. The pungent smell of sea weed filled the ocean air. The energetic sea smashed across the promenade like falling bricks.   Michael , Lily and Stephanie

The mighty thunder boomed in the middle of the sea. It made a horrendous noise.   Leah and Keyan

The sea was very vicious and terrifying . It was like a gigantic shark searching for its prey.    Joanna and Jake

The sea was a vicious  wolf tearing the little boat apart. The forceful sea threatened everything in its way.   Jakub, Brandon  and Ryan Porter

Louise from Zoo Lab came into our class today with some very interesting and unusual nocturnal creatures. We learnt lots of fascinating facts and were lucky enough to be able to handle some of them!

Visit to Eden Camp

As part of the history topic on World War 2 Class 4 and 5 visited Eden Camp.

Eden Camp is a multi-award winning Modern History Theme Museum housed within the grounds of an original World War Two prisoner of war camp.  It was developed into a museum as a tribute to all people, civilian and military, who endured hardship throughout World War Two.

The boys and girls had a taste of what life must have been like during the war and thoroughly enjoyed their visit.

Ethan, Ryan and Lewis are very proud of the biscuits they made as part of a Maths lesson on measuring weight!

Thanks, boys, they were delicious!!

Class 4 are really enjoying using our interactive display to improve our writing.

We now use words like colossal and diminutive instead of big and small!

See the video of the Year 3 and Year 4s recent residential to Halton Gill below...

Our Geography topic has been all about the Rainforests and as you can see Class 4 have had great fun making a rainforest in class! How many different kinds of creatures can you see?

48 children from 8 Primary schools took part in the 2013 Titus Salt School Art IMP project. The aim of the project is to develop skills in both practical artwork and ICT.

This year the art workshop was delivered by Mrs Graham from Titus Salt School and Simon Kent, a professional sculptor. Students carved their own sculptures from breeze blocks using an African mask theme for inspiration.

The ICT workshop was delivered by Miss Johnston. The children worked with images of their own sculptures and African textiles to produce a digital image using a software programme called Adobe Photoshop.

As part of our charity giving in Lent, Class 4 made and sold biscuits. We had had plenty of practice as making biscuits was our D.T. topic. We made lots of posters and put them up all around school, hoping someone would come and buy them!

On the Monday of Holy Week we were not very sure how many to make so we thought 100 would be plenty but unfortunately we had to disappoint some children as we quickly sold them all.

Once again on Tuesday we could have sold more than we had time to make.

On Wednesday we were determined to make as many as we could so we rolled our sleeves up and managed to make, decorate and sell over 200 biscuits!

Big thanks goes to Mrs Goddard and Mrs Powell for all their hard work and to everyone in Class 4 for their enthusiasm and commitment and for raising a fantastic £83 for Catholic Care.

As part of our science topic Earth, Sun and Moon, Year 4 and Year 5 went to the Star Centre in Keighley. We had a great day and learnt a lot about the solar system!

The children went into the Planetarium and saw all the planets orbiting the Sun as well as the constellations.

They had a go in Mission Control, working a robotic arm and dressed up in a space suit so that they could catch aliens on the Moon!

We were also lucky enough to watch a live link of the astronauts working in the International Space Station!!!

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE FROM CLASS 4
