Every Child   Every Chance   Every Day   Together with Christ

Welcome to Class 4!

Class teacher: Miss Hartley

Support Assistants: Mrs. Holmes & Mrs. Holland

It says on our display that class 4 are 'one in a minion' and we most certainly are!

Our class rules, recorded to the tune of 'We Will Rock You'.

This half term our topic is 'Saltaire'.

During this topic we have looked at the life and works of Titus Salt (founder of Saltaire). We compared the life of a child apprentice to our own lives and looked at the changes in Saltaire since it was first built.

We were fortunate enough to have a visit from Mrs Cousens, who told us all about Salts mill's weaving history and we even had a go at weaving some coloured plastic bags ourselves- though it was very fiddly!

On our trip to Saltaire, we had a look around the mill to find out more information about its history. The weather stayed dry just long enough for us to have a picnic and a play in Robert's park! You can see a few of the pictures from our trip below:

In Spring term 2 our topic was 'Deserts and Rainforests'.

During this topic, we looked at the people and animals that live in both rainforests and deserts and how they have adapted in order to survive. We also looked at deforestation and poaching.

In literacy, we looked at a warning tale. In a warning tale, the main character is warned not to do something or go somewhere, but they do it anyway and something bad happens, the main character then needs to be rescued and in the end they are punished for doing what they were warned against. By the end of this topic the children successfully wrote a warning tale in groups as well as writing an independent warning tale. We particularly focused on using dialogue and inverted commas for speech.

In Spring term 1 our topic was 'Ancient Egypt'.

During this topic we looked at where the ancient Egyptians fitted within history. We looked at every day life, including jobs and the clothing they would have worn and we gained an understanding of why the river Nile was so important to them. We also looked at Egyptian gods and created our own cartouches of our names (see below). Finally, as part of our D.T we created 'Class 4's Mummy Museum' in order to do this, we researched, designed, created and evaluated our own sarcophagus along with a mummy to go inside!

In Autumn term 2 our topic was 'Weather and Climate'.

In this topic we gained an insight of climate, by looking at the different climates around the world as well as climate zones. We also looked at different types of weather, including extreme weather and how this impacts on every day life. Additionally, we looked at weather symbols and how to read weather forecasts.

In Autumn term 1 our topic was 'The Vicious Vikings'.

We had a lot of fun looking at: Viking warriors, everyday life in the Viking era, Viking houses, creating messages with runes and looking at Viking beliefs about the afterlife. We even designed and created our own 3D models of Viking longboat heads using paper mache.
